Fortify Vitality with Daoist Moxibustion

Vitality is a curious thing in the human body. When we have it, we so easily take for granted the way we can bound into action to accomplish tasks, our bodies robust ability to heal from illness and injury and the refreshed way we feel throughout our days. When our vital energy, or qi is depleted, the longing for basic functions can be nearly unbearable. Difficulty digesting, trouble recovering from illness, chronic inflammation, poor sleep, sluggish and depressed daily energy can all result having significant impact in our daily lives.

Eventually the vitality within all of us fades and our body returns to dust while our soul continues the journey into the mystery. Yet as long as we are living, the internal alchemy of the 12 organs of the body are working their best to generate vitality. Cultivating the spark of life is the crux of all healing traditions and Chinese medicine is especially rich with its resources to nourish vitality.

In the fall of 2024 I had the tremendous opportunity to travel to China to experience a new realm of healing through the Daoist Moxibustion tradition. While the use of moxa has been part of my medical practice for over 20 years, the experience I had with this new system was astounding.

I invite you to join me to experience this tradition with in-person care at my clinic in Lyons, Colorado.

Master Li Shi Zhen was a Chinese medicine scholar and practitioner that was one of the first to transfer the wisdom traditions of the ancient practices into written text. He was not only a genius of healing, but an incredibly detailed scientist to categorize herbs and understand the detail of the practices he utilized for healing. Today, his legacy lives on in Chinese medicine doctors around the world.

Li Shi Zhen identified tremendous healing properties of a herb known as moxa. He cultivated this herb on the land where he lived according to the specific practices that followed the principles of activating the highest energy of the plant. Modern moxa has very little relationship to this traditional plant and many have identified it is an entirely different species. However, Masters Zhou and Zhang are a devoted couple that have dedicated their lives and resources to the restoration of the original moxa farm of China, now known as the Moxa Palace.

Through the tradition of Daoist Moxibustion, the full healing capacity of this medicinal plant is now available through the Li Shi Zhen Yang Sheng Tang Rehabilitation of Moxibustion training base in China. I am honored to be among the first group of internationally trained doctors to be able to share this resource through Stillwater clinic.

Here are some more photos from my time at the Moxa Palace.
